There is some weakness in the portrayal of the supporting characters, and the novel is much more interested in painting vivid word-pictures that give the reader a sort of strobe-light impression of events than it is in any kind of serious character study. Kerouac is doing stuff I haven’t seen anyone do in American Lit, and Kerouac is just such a romantic and optimist that it is hard to hate the man.
While the bulk of On The Road was written in this way, making it an American classic, I have to say that for this book, it didn’t work as well. Man, Kerouac could be a sexist pig. Kerouac shows their growth and takes his readers through the realization that things aren’t like they expected them to be. Once I remember that, and let go of what I think I know about grammar and punctuation, this evens out into a smooth read. Urban legend has it that On the Road is the primary example of Kerouac’s “spontaneous prose,” but the description works much better for The Subterraneans, for better and for worse.

The picture of the love is convincing. With the smugness of hindsight, let’s not lose sight of the fact that the man changed the course of American literature with prose like this.

Not because it was difficult, but because of how bland it was. This was an interesting story about a person searching for his path and purpose.
Mardou is black, but the funny thing is, is that this topic doesn’t stir the racial pot at all really. A veces su kerouav tambalea ante sus prejuicios raciales, sexuales, etc The novel, written as a first-person memoir, has been criticized for its portrayal of American minority groups, especially African Americans, in a superficial light, often portraying them in a humble and primitive manner without showing insight into their culture or social position at the time.
The language was dull and lacked description and sbterraneos long periods at a time meandered off into drug-induced rants that made no real sense to the reader. I am not sure where Kerouac wished to go with this book; I am not even sure if he went there. The Subterraneans is the story of this relationship and how it winds to a close with Jack deciding in the end he wanted life on his own boozy terms.

In grammar, plot, and narrative, it was deficient, and dare I say it? The sentences seem more like lyrics than in the other two books.

Here he loves a woman Mardou but as always can never let that love develop and take root, he uproots it before it can, just another self sabotaged relationship in a life of broken bonds.
