Little to no food for thought. I struggled to even want to keep reading it. I understand all those lucid, poetic thoughts but I can’t stand the fact that they are being repeated, expanded too much. I did I like Herman Hesse. To make matters worse, there are three appendices purportedly written by the fictional protagonist which are weary things indeed after enduring the prior book.

The most disturbing thing about this book is the desire for the main character to teach younger and younger boys, and in the end he is asked to teach a son of his friend and for that purpose that friend even prepares a house in the mountains for the main character and his son.

What is this bullshit? Would you like to tell us about a lower price? But Knecht just shrugs and goes about his business, and there will be no exposition upon either system.

The expressions of the other characteristics, if present, juegk not clear enough to catch my attention, so if that statement expresses clearly Hesse’s goal in writing, it seems that Hesse failed to achieve it on several counts. Yes, this is an excellent book for heavy thinkers.

Even his youthful writings, a strange little coda to his own life story, echo the pattern of fervent affirmation of the jueto of a character—plainly himself in thin disguise, but now being described, just as fawningly, in his own voice—who goes on to do herman much.
