This book was so cut and dry for me. Iggulven mother is Irish and from an early age she told me history as an exciting series of stories — with dates.

It is a good tale and well written with pace and thrills and maintained at igguulden right levels. What emerges is both a grand romantic tale of coming-of-age in the Roman Empire and a vibrant portrait of the early years of a man who would become the most powerful ruler on earth: As the boys grow up, both start coveting the attention of Alexandria, a slave on their home estate.

Ceasar is captured in a way I have never seen before as he begins his journey from boyhood into the man that we all know from our history texts. The life of Caesar as a young boy is quite skectchy in details and Iggulden indulges his artistic freedom to create an image of the man who is equal parts prophesied wonder-boy and debonair playboy who tries to get inside every other woman’s trousers.
Superbly rendered, grippingly told, Emperor, The Gates of Rome is a work of vaulting imagination from a powerful new voice in historical fiction.
