This idea, however, has been elucidated by Bwrsani Winnicott many years ago, and followed up on in many psychoanalytic interpretive writings on the research that has been done on infant development. Leo Bersani wrote the first three chapters, with Phillips reacting in the fourth, and a brief conclusion is offered by Bersani, which reacts to Phillips’ comments. A discussion of the radical intimacles of barebacking—unprotected anal sex between gay men—delineates an intimacy that rejects the personal.
In pursuit of new forms of intimacy they take up a range of concerns across a variety of contexts. Their conversation takes as its point of departure psychoanalysis and its central importance to the modern imagination – though equally important is their shared sense that by misleading us about the importance of self-knowledge and the danger of narcissism, psychoanalysis has failed to realize its most exciting and innovative relational potential.

While I enjoy the writing of both authors, the layout and flow of ideas in this book seem scattered. Thus, sadistically motivated narcissism is also masochistically satisfying.
